Personal Athletic Decathalon

Submitted by Almon on Fri, 12/07/2007 - 10:48.

I have been working out quite a bit lately and the other day I stopped to ask myself what for. In light of having no response to this question (as I play nothing more than casual sports) me and my friend decided to make an athletic decathlon for ourselves so we have something to work toward and so our entire emphasis doesn't rest on one facet of fitness. However we could only get 9 which are:
1. run a mile in under 5 minutes
2. qualify for boston marathon
3. do 100 consecutive pushups
4. do 33 consecutive pullups
5. swim 5000 meters consecutively
6. kick 40 yard field goal
7. bike to the boundary waters in 2 days (250 miles from my house)
8. dunk a basketball
9. shoot even par
I am 21 right now and we gave ourselves 9 years to accomplish these (which some people view as a long time/others say not long enough) Our field goal objective is pretty dumb but we were kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel. Anyways if anyones got an idea for a 10th, or can compile a list of their own it would be fun to compare.

i say take out the 8 cookies

i say take out the 8 cookies or 6 cupcakes. if you want to be healthy but are gonna feel the need for carbs make it something not totally unhealthy. some wheat toast for example.

also, i know you two both like to eat out a ****ton. make sure you think about what youre eating with regards to this bet.

both of you will not

both of you will not complete til Jan.... its just gonna be a matter of who gives up first

we are taking small action

we are taking small action that BOTH of us do this

even stuff like broccoli has

even stuff like broccoli has a few carbs in it.

does broc. fit in the "fruit" exception clause?

i have action and am in on

i have action and am in on this prop as well, but for not as much as raptor and durr.

i eat the worst out of the 3 of us by far.

we would like suggestions as to what kinds of foods should be allowed and what should not be allowed.

for instance pokeromglol,
i would think that steamed broccoli would be fine, but broc+cheese would not. not sure though

the guidelines havent been set 100% yet, so we would like some of you fitness gurus to chime in with your thoughts here.

broccoli should be

broccoli should be fine/spinach/other green vegetables. potatoes and other starchy things are obviously no good.

no rice should be fine. rice is the equivalent of pasta and is 100% carb vegetable.

I'm having a hard time

I'm having a hard time making sense of this. I know about the least about diet of folks who contribute around here, but broccoli is fine, but cheese and broccoli is out? Broccoli is almost all carbs and cheese is almost none. The bet is about not eating carbs, right? Fruit is almost all carbs, and that is all in, right?

I'm confused. Clearly you are confused as well.

yeah we are all stupid and

yeah we are all stupid and just want to eat super healthy for a month. we figured that knocking out the majority of carbs would be the basis for the diet, along with other stuff that is 'bad' for you. we would like some of you to help getting the guidelines set up

*edit* skim milk only during the bet as well

the bet i think is eating

the bet i think is eating healthy. not only no carbs.

cookie rule should be out for a better bet. More chance someone will lose if caught eating something like this.

xmas and new year exceptions should be ok.

not banning alcohol is good.

"5) 2 Very small and unintentional onetime slipups are allowed (i.e. drinking iced tea that’s sweetened and not realizing it)- no intentional slipups- even while drunk, are allowed (you must have actually thought the food had no carbs at the time it was consumed)."

this is a ****ty rule because slip up would cause one of you too win. What kind of slip up could there be really. If you are not sure ice tea is unsweetened dont drink it until you know. If you cant find out ask someone or just dont drink it all together. That would be a fun part of the bet.

I am not a huge fan of no carb diets. I would just make it no ****ty food. Fruit has carbs and fruit is pretty good for you. Snacking on fruit and veggies would be ok.

If you are in vegas this will be tough because of all the temptations. You will prolly be eating out alot so you are going to have to be really picky on the places you eat, and how you are ordering your food. ok nvm just found out that you are going to be in tx.

Just dont keep any bad foods in the house. Go get one of your friends that knows something about nutrition to go shopping for you. You are all smart guys and know how to eat healthy. Dont keep anything in the house that will tempt you to cheat.

O I think that alcohol rule should be changed to make it you cant mix it with anything that contains carbs. That would make a night drinking harder. You can mix tons of drinks without any carbs as mixer but in the swing of a night of drinking it might be hard to cheat.

Now that I think about it you should make the 2 slip ups alcohol only. Like drinking a red bull vodka or something would be the cheat.
'
You should be allowed to drink milk.

nobu exception is cool, so are the new years and x mas, you want to eat and stuff with your family around the holidays.

This is a good and bad time of the year for the bet. Tons of cheating occurs around x mas time when you are with your family and friends around the holidays. It makes it easy to say **** it I want to have a good holiday and will just wear the speedo.

durr and rap have a huge adv. over chuddo by having a personal assistant. When they want a snack they can be like go get me some steamed veggies and chix breast or something.

I'll put up 1k that neither

I'll put up 1k that neither of you make it.

Note: WTF? You're allowed like a zillion different types of carbs. This is retarded. You guys still stand like zero chance.
It took me a few minutes to figure this out as well. When I realized they weren't going to be feeling like complete death for a month (well mostly) I was somewhat disappointed.

im not sure about dairy

im not sure about dairy yet... but yes we obviously want to live our lives normally and the money is a fairly small concern- but getting in shape is by far the large one. If you want to book 1k send it to either hold_emnl or bebop86 (stars) or durrrr/aeron73 (ftp) if for whatever reason you think we will grimm u for 1k we can get some1 else. Also if other people want action please wait until we confirm in thread etc (to make sure we notice etc).

also fwiw i feel like we are

also fwiw i feel like we are an underdog in this bet by a decent margin (maybe 25%ish that we win), however additional group action will slightly increase our chances- and at the least definitely increase how long we hold out for. This is mainly because i will feel slightly worse losing dave money than losing my own and vice versa... we are trying to get 10k or so on the side booked.

Def true about working

Def true about working together makes your chances a lot higher.

Not sure how often you drink but cutting that down for a month reduces the chance of drunken munchies which is prob one of the easiest ways to slip up.

I'm not worried you'll grimm

I'm not worried you'll grimm at all. Its just it isn't really no carbs. You've basically said everything is free game barring bread, pasta (rice WTF?!?!?) and sweets. And you've given yourself a ration of those. In addition you're allowing dairy and stuff with booze. So it isn't really no carbs at all. Which takes like 99% of the masochism out of this.

just so everyone knows, my

just so everyone knows, my standard diet consists of waking up and eating whatever the hell i can find, usually leftover chinese with lots of noodles and fried rice an stuff. then i sit around eating candy all day while on the computer, then usually go work out after my healthy meals. for dinner we go out almost every night and eat steak and potatoes and crabcakes and tons and tons of bread. then drink. then later i eat more candy, pop some popcorn, and make a milkshake. thats a standard day for me, so this should be a GIGANTIC challenge.

as far as the bet goes, its basically no processed carb stuff. stuff that burns more carbs in the digestion process is obviously fair game, fruit, broccoli, crap like that. i fully intend to be eating billions of grapes and apples, as well as snacking on sunflower seeds and almonds. prob gonna eat a lot of tuna and salmon, and lots of chicken breasts. im not sure rule on bbq sauce and stuff, but i think it has lots of carbs and sugar and stuff, so that should be out as well. yummm i cant wait.

Wow. I'm definitely going to

Wow. I'm definitely going to be eating a ton of delicious food while u kids are dying of hunger. I'm also going to bring over a dozen donuts early 1 morning and eat them in front of both of you. Mmmmm

WTF there are so many

WTF there are so many exceptions it makes this bet really lame.

"Steamed rice" !? How can people who are so good at poker be so dumb ?

WTF oatmeal should be a

WTF oatmeal should be a staple of any healthy diet.

http://www.calorieking.com/

http://www.calorieking.com/ is my favorite website of its kind, it tells you all the nutritional info of pretty much any food. Something like that will be very useful. Yeah, bbq sauce is all carbs.

thats why we made the

thats why we made the thread... should steamed rice not be allowed? reason?

we will slightly modify

we will slightly modify advice to take advice that seems/sounds right... what type of oatmeal and how much etc?

Question : Is the bet

Question : Is the bet supposed to be about eating healthy, or just about not eating carbs?

Yes, steamed rice = 100% simple starch. Seriously, if you don't know that I don't know how you can evaluate what food is low carb or not for this bet.

Some suggestions:

Absolutely no processed foods allowed (they all have corn syrup or hidden starches).

Nothing baked, no rice, no potato, no pasta, no bread, no granola, etc.

No fast food unless you check the nutrition and it's near zero-carb. (again the vast majority has added corn syrup and such)

Any fruit or vegetable or meat or nuts is fine. (but no juice, only whole fruit and veg) (fruit is very high carb but it's healthy and you should allow it to make this a bit easier, you'll definitely need the fruit to get through it)

Alcohol is allowed but no sugary additives such as soda or juice. No beer. So wine is okay, vodka-soda is ok, gin & tonic is ok.

Get rid of the cookie/cupcake exception.

It's less than a month and you've given yourself a lot of grace periods so this seems really easy if fruit or high-GI veg is allowed.

"1) Either 8 cookies OR 6

"1) Either 8 cookies OR 6 cupcakes to be consumed throughout the month" - kill that

"2) A 24hr christmas exception (to be used on or around christmas)" - OK

"3) A 36hr new years exception (from noon new years eve until the end of new years day)" - kill that

"4) Any drink within reason is allowed if it has a large amount of alcohol (crown and coke vodka cranberry etc)" - kill that. drinks should be limited to liquors w/ no sweet mixers. whiskey, martini, tequila, vodka soda, etc. (no tonic or soda or juice)

"5) 2 Very small and unintentional onetime slipups are allowed (i.e. drinking iced tea that’s sweetened and not realizing it)- no intentional slipups- even while drunk, are allowed (you must have actually thought the food had no carbs at the time it was consumed)." - OK

"6) One nobu dinner in vegas with some exceptions" - OK

Put fruit on the "no" list as well.

Guys, No eating out should

Guys,

No eating out should be part of this.

Guys, No eating out should

Guys,

No eating out should be part of this.

All, I predict that they

All,

I predict that they grill tons of huge, fatty steaks and end up less fit.Almonds/nuts are a no-go!

"you'll definitely need the

"you'll definitely need the fruit to get through it"

If they include fruit, this becomes an easy bet.

and if you do include fruit,

and if you do include fruit, this should def not include any dried fruit. beer and wine should be off and if you cant drink crown straight up, at least do so with diet coke instead of regular.

I'd gladly take anyone up on

I'd gladly take anyone up on this. Huge fatty steaks are a stable of a man's healthy diet.

All, Just had awesome IM

All,

Just had awesome IM argument w/ chud where he adamantly claimed strawberries are a low carb fruit.
That was more of a general example of my point that even if they were able to succeed at this, I doubt they would actually accomplish their goal of eating healthy.
If the main goal is to eat healthy here and get in sick shape, then you need to be thinking about fat and total calories here.

What you should do is just get on www.fitday.com or http://www.traineo.com/ or something and just track everything you consume with certain thresholds in place for daily calories / carbs / fat.
The initial bet as presented to me by chud was a zero-carb challenge that was really hard. Apparently they have no clue on what exactly they are trying to bet.

Very true. Considering they

Very true. Considering they 1) Don't know WTF a carb is 2) What contains these aforementioned "mysterious" carbs 3) What is remotely healthy.
This is why I was hesitant about betting this. Even by your rules, I might win this bet like 30 times during the course of the first week without you guys realizing it.

thats exactly why i took

thats exactly why i took this bet

Good point. Then again his

Good point.

Then again his list is growing so wide... Who cares? What can he not eat... Flour? Candy? Potatoes?

It's a variation on TEGWAR-- "the exciting game without any rules."

They make it up as they go along and hold committee meetings to vote on whether ketchup is a vegetable. And if you unknowingly/mistakenly sin against a present or future rule, you get a few passes.

You could do a low carb challenge. Track all your intake. Man with lowest total carbs wins. Maybe give fiber a pass or partial of some sort. (This is in keeping with the original carb idea.)

You could do a Paleo challenge. Try to eat strict Paleo for a month. (This in keeping with anti-grain/rice/dairy thing).

so where are any

so where are any updates?
